playball studio was approached by a Client who had recently purchased a lush green parcel of land, thirty minutes away from Vadodara. He had an idea to use this land to build a villa where he could retire, entertain his friends, and grow vegetables.

The Client also had a very clear idea that he wanted to use local building materials and techniques for this project.

The villa is divided into three major wings – bedrooms, living areas, kitchen and dinning. These wings are divided by circulation and services corridors which align with the avenues formed by the trees.

After surveying the site and its features, we identified a patch on the eastern edge of the site which did not have any trees. It was a conscious decision to not disturb the existing vegetation of the site in any way. Thus, the approach was to design the built forms in a way that they respond to the trees, in a way that the spatial character of the built environment is dependent on the character of the trees.

The living areas open to the entrance court on the east and to the pool on the west. The bedrooms open to shaded courtyards, while the kitchen opens to a small farming area, where herbs, vegetables and fruits can be grown for consumption. The dining area opens to an open court which can also serve as an extension space, when hosting guests.
