G.T. High School for Girls has been imparting education to girls from underprivileged background since 1928. A beautifully designed colonial structure functions as a School, in a compound in the centre of Rajkot. Behind the School, the trustees had built some conventional dormitory rooms in the 80s. But recently the number of students coming to study from outside of Rajkot have increased, which is why the trustees approached us to design a larger hostel facility in place of the old one.

Considering the available area, and the permissible height, we devised a concept idea of a cluster of rooms with double height courtyards at regular intervals. These courts are designed to give the inhabitants  breathing spaces where cross learning and interactions can take place. Apart from this, these courts also serve as necessary punctures in the overall mass to accentuate the cross ventilation systems for every room.

The openings of all clusters are covered by screens which also become a part of the overall mass. Apart from the courtyards, no openings offer a direct clear view; privacy has to be given importance as this being a hostel facility for girls. The modular arrangement of the clusters also allows the structural system to be worked out in a way that the overall cost of construction is kept under control.
