On the outskirts of Ahmedabad, a group of like-minded people aspired to create a commune where they can live and enjoy life collectively, but at the same time, have their individual private space. We were invited to submit a proposal with no set brief, apart from this general idea. After a series of discussions, we identified the activities that joined all of them together – yoga, meditation and outdoor leisure (which is becoming a luxury in most crammed Indian cities).

The site is divided into three separate zones – community centre, common cooking and dinning area, and individual residential units.

The community centre is divided into three parts – Indoor hall for yoga and meditation with skylights, amphitheatre for outdoor common activities, and a recessed water body for rain water retention and casual swimming. All of these parts are seamlessly connected by a series of ramps and walkways.

The individual residential units follow the same logic as that of the community centre; open spaces are provided at the front and back, and every room is indirectly lit via a continuous skylight.
